The Faculty of Law and Criminology of the ULB is organising the 13th ACCA (assistentenconferentie/ conférence de assist.e.s) on 17 November 2023. The conference will focus on the far from unambiguous interactions between the law on the one hand and the environment and climate on the other.

Diplômée de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles en droit public et international (bachelier et master), j’ai approfondi mes études avec un L.L.M. en droit international de l'environnement à l'Université Queen Mary de Londres. Actuellement, je suis doctorante à l'Université Saint-Louis Bruxelles, sous la direction de la Professeure Delphine Misonne. Mon domaine de recherche porte sur le rôle des lignes directrices de l'OMS dans le droit de l'environnement, plus particulièrement dans le domaine de la qualité de l'eau et de la qualité de l'air. Je travaille également à l'Université Libre de Bruxelles en tant qu'assistante chargée d’exercice en droit international public. Enfin, j’ai encadré les étudiants de l’ULB lors de leur participation, en tant que délégués nationaux, au Model United Nations 2023 (New York).
Anthony Bochon is a member of the Brussels Bar since 2011. A business attorney with experience as seconded in-house counsel, he assists companies, public institutions and non-governmental organisations on economic law, IP and regulatory issues. Involved for many years in EU-funded projects, he is currently involved in two H2020 projects (Sabydoma and Bionanopolys). He also pursues an academic career since 2011 at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) where he is currently an associate lecturer in EU law and Economic Law. Since 2018, he is a part-time Ph.D. candidate at the same university with a thesis on a holistic theory of innovation law. He has authored more than 20 legal publications, including recently the “Code de la recherche et du développement technologique” published in April 2023 (in French).
Alice Briegleb est chercheuse et assistante au Centre Perelman de philosophie du droit. Elle est titulaire d’un Master en droit (ULB, 2019) et d’un LL.M en droit européen (Collège d’Europe, 2020). Elle a ensuite entamé son parcours professionnel en qualité d’avocate avant d’intégrer l’équipe du Centre en octobre 2022. Elle dispense des travaux pratiques en Introduction au droit et en Droit des obligations. Ses recherches s’orientent vers le domaine de la responsabilité des entreprises en matière de protection de l’environnement et de lutte contre le réchauffement climatique, dont la publication d’informations et le devoir de vigilance des entreprises en matière de durabilité.
Melissa Brouwers studeerde rechten aan de Universiteit van Hasselt (2022) en is sinds oktober 2022 verbonden aan de Universiteit van Hasselt als doctoraatsbursaal. Haar onderzoek focust op het recht op toegang tot de rechter in omgevingszaken.
Arthur Fallas est avocat au barreau de Bruxelles et assistant en droit international à l’Université Libre de Bruxelles. Il pratique essentiellement le droit du commerce international et le droit des organisations internationales. Ses recherches, elles, se concentrent sur le droit international humanitaire, le droit de l’environnement et le règlement des différends internationaux.
Pia Groenewolt joined the VUB’s Law, Science, Technology and Society research group in September 2022 to work on the Data4food2030 project. As a Ph.D. candidate, she works under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Niels van Dijk at the d.pia.lab.
She holds a Bachelor degree in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Calgary, a Master of Social Sciences in Sociology from the University of Helsinki, a Master in Political Science from the ULB, and an Advanced Master's in Human Right from Université Saint-Louis - Bruxelles.
After having gained working experience at the International labour Organisation, the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swiss Academy for Development, Pia gained extensive experience in European Projects through positions at ALL DIGITAL aisbl and at European SchoolNet.
Aura Iurascu has been a Marie Curie-funded Ph.D. candidate in Law at the University of Hasselt, Belgium, since September 2021. She obtained the Juris Doctor degree (Dottore Magistrale in Giurisprudenza) 110/110 from the University of Turin (Italy) with a comparative dissertation in green public procurement. She specialized in public procurement and environmental law and was licensed to practice law in 2021 by the Turin Bar.
Titulaire d’un master en droit (2009), Marie Jadoul est actuellement doctorante au Crid&p à l’UCLouvain. Elle a débuté une recherche doctorale qui a pour vocation de croiser les notions de désobéissance civile écologique et de libertés fondamentales / d’état de nécessité (« écologique » ?) en droit pénal. Auparavant, elle a exercé la fonction de conseillère adjointe – directrice adjointe de l’aide / de la protection de la Jeunesse à la FWB, elle a été avocate durant 8 ans en droit pénal et pénitentiaire, droit de la jeunesse et droit familial. Elle a été membre de la Commission de surveillance de la prison d’Ittre entre 2014-2018 et a été assistante d’enseignement en droit pénal à l’UCLouvain en 2017-2019. Les questions relatives au droit pénitentiaire, au droit de la jeunesse, aux droits de l’homme et au droit pénal en relation avec la protection de l’environnement l’intéressent particulièrement.
Konstantinidi Marina-Elissavet
Marina Konstantinidi is a lawyer admitted to the Piraeus Bar Association of Greece, currently working at the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) in the role of legal and financial support officer. During the year 2021-2022 she was a visiting researcher at the Centre de Droit International of ULB doing research on the interaction of international investment law and climate mitigation.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in law (Democritus University of Thrace - 2017), an LL.M. in public international law (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens - 2019), and an LL.M. in international and European energy law (Democritus University of Thrace - 2022).
François-Xavier Lievens a étudié le droit à l’UCLouvain (2012-2017) puis a travaillé comme assistant remplaçant à l’UCLouvain (2017-2019) et comme juriste au sein du service d’études et de formation de la Centrale nationale des employés (CNE-CSC) (2019-2021). Depuis septembre 2021, il travaille comme assistant à temps plein à l’UCLouvain et a démarré une thèse sous la direction de Filip Dorssemont.
Pierfrancesco is a PhD Candidate and Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant in European and International Economic Law at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. His main research interests are competition law and policy, international trade law and policy, and economic diplomacy. He is conducting a doctoral research project on the EU Foreign Subsidies Regulation. He has working experience in public institutions and think tanks based in Brussels and Rome in the field of trade policy and EU-ASEAN relations. Since 2020, he is a task force member for the Think20, the research and policy advice network of the G20.
Matthias Petel est doctorant à l'UCLouvain et à l’université d’Harvard. Il travaille sur les contentieux climatiques stratégiques contre les Etats et les multinationales. Plus généralement, il s’intéresse à l’utilisation croissante du vocabulaire des droits – humains ou de la nature -pour appréhender les enjeux écologiques. Il est également président de la Commission environnement de la Ligue des droits humains (LDH).
Justine Richelle is a double PhD candidate at the University of Hasselt and Maastricht University (the Netherlands) since February 2021. In Hasselt, she is a member of the Environmental Law Unit led by her supervisor Prof. Dr Carole Billiet. In Maastricht, she is a member of the Institute for Transnational Research and of the Maastricht Center for European Law, together with her supervisors Prof. Dr Mariolina Eliantonio and Prof. Dr Marjan Peeters. Her research focuses on public participation in environmental decision-making. More specifically, it explores the rules in place in Belgium, France, and Ireland in light of the obligations set in the Aarhus Convention and the implementing EU law in the field of air quality and pollution.
Maëlle Rixhon est, depuis 2018, avocate au barreau de Bruxelles au sein du cabinet DLA Piper UK LLP et, depuis 2019, assistante à l’Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles, où elle est membre du Séminaire Interdisciplinaire d’Études Juridiques (SIEJ) et du Centre Interdisciplinaire de Recherches en Droit Constitutionnel et Administratif (CIRC). Elle est également chercheuse (navorser) au sein de l’Université d’Hasselt durant l’année académique 2022-2023, rattachée au centre Centrum Overheid en Recht (CORe), dans le cadre du CE center steunpunt circulaire economie (https://ce-center.vlaanderen-circulair.be/nl). Passionnée par le droit administratif sous toutes ces facettes, elle concentre sa pratique sur le droit des marchés publics au sens large, de l’urbanisme, de l’environnement et du domaine public, en ayant à l’esprit le nouveau Code civil. Principalement en droit des marchés publics et en droit civil, elle est l’auteure de diverses publications et intervient à des colloques. De sa pratique a émergé des questions qui l’ont menée à entreprendre des recherches sur les problématiques liées à la durabilité, en particulier les aspects environnementaux et circulaires, des marchés publics.
Gilles Rouvroy behaalde in 2020 zijn Master in de rechten (magna cum laude) aan de UGent. Eerder behaalde hij een Master in de Criminologische Wetenschappen (UGent). Sinds 2021 is Gilles actief als mandaatassistent waarbij hij onderwijsondersteuning biedt voor de opleidingsonderdelen algemene rechtsleer, rechtsvinding en onderzoeksmethoden. Zijn onderzoek betreft een sociologische studie naar de invloed van doctrine op het privaatrecht (toegespitst op punitieve elementen in het verbintenissenrecht, met name schadebedingen en weigering van restitutie). Op die manier combineert hij sociaal-wetenschappelijke onderzoeksmethoden met een positiefrechtelijk thema.
Gilles is eveneens als advocaat verbonden aan de balie van Brussel, waar hij zich voornamelijk bezighoudt met contractenrecht en aansprakelijkheidsrecht.
Joeri Vandendriessche (1996°) is doctoraatsstudent (doctoraatsbursaal) aan de faculteit rechten van de Universiteit Antwerpen. Hij doet onderzoek en werkt aan een proefschrift over de juridische aspecten van cryptofinanciering en meer bepaald de kapitaalmarkten- en financieelrechtelijke aspecten van deze vorm van financiering voor duurzaamheidsprojecten (specifiek: natuurgebaseerde oplossingen) in steden. Dit onderzoek gebeurt onder het promotorschap van prof. Robby Houben (UAntwerpen) en kadert binnen een ruimer onderzoeksproject over de implementatie en innovatieve financiering van natuurgebaseerde oplossingen in Vlaamse steden (Innofins). Verder is Joeri bestuurslid van Ifese, het instituut voor filosofische en sociaalwetenschappelijke educatie en heeft hij publicaties binnen het financieel recht en de geschiedenis van het economisch denken.
During my law studies, I developed a profound passion for law, academic research and scientific vigorousness. This passion resulted in a PhD project under the promotorship of Ilse Samoy and Ivo Giesen, on which I started working since October 2021. This joint PhD-project between the University of Utrecht and the KULeuven will be exploring the claim for fear damage in environmental cases from an interdisciplinary point of view.
Caroline Van Esbroeck is een doctoraatsonderzoeker aan de UHasselt. Binnen de eenheid Bestuursrecht maakt zij deel uit van het Centrum voor Overheid en Recht. Zij startte in oktober 2021 in het vakgebied omgevingsrecht. Ze is bezig aan een doctoraat (LL.D) met als titel: “Nature-based Solutions (NBS) voor meer klimaatbestendige Vlaamse steden: de Vlaamse ruimtelijke instrumenten heroverwogen”. Haar doctoraat kadert binnen het FWO-project InnoFiNS, dat zich focust op innovatieve financieringsinstrumenten voor NBS in een stedelijke context.
Caroline behaalde een Master in de Rechten (Universiteit Antwerpen) en een Master in de stedenbouw aan de faculteit Ontwerpwetenschappen (Universiteit Antwerpen).
Julie Van Vaerenbergh is sinds 1 februari 2023 doctoraatsonderzoekster aan de faculteit Rechten van de Universiteit Antwerpen. Na het behalen van haar master in de rechten (2022), werkte ze vijf maanden als advocaat-stagiair bij het in het bouwrecht gespecialiseerde kantoor Equator. Haar klassiek juridisch onderzoek richt zich op de inhoud en draagwijdte van de contractuele fout vanuit een rechtsvergelijkend perspectief met Frankrijk, Nederland en Engeland. Om te bepalen of er sprake is van een contractuele fout wordt een dubbel onderscheid tussen een inspannings- en een resultaatsverbintenis gehanteerd. In haar doctoraat zal ze zich echter buigen over de lacunes die het huidige onderscheid kent. Ten eerste zal ze onderzoeken of het huidige onderscheid vandaag de dag nog steeds moet worden gezien als een strikte tweedeling. Ten tweede tracht ze met haar onderzoek duidelijkheid te geven over wat de precieze rol van de rechter en de contractpartijen is bij het bepalen van een contractuele fout. Tot slot is haar onderzoek gericht op het bouwrecht in het bijzonder vanwege de relevantie ervan in bouwgeschillen. Professoren Britt Weyts (verbintenissenrecht), Nicolas Carette (bouwrecht) en Gert Straetmans (consumentenrecht) begeleiden haar doctoraat. Ze zijn allen professor aan de Universiteit Antwerpen.
Jonas Voorter is a postdoctoral researcher in construction law and circular economy at Tilburg University and Hasselt University. Jonas completed his PhD research at Hasselt University in 2023. His research focuses on the legal transition towards a circular economy in the Belgian and (western) European construction sector.
Pierre Walckiers est aspirant F.S.R.-FNRS au Centre de philosophie du droit de Louvain-la-Neuve. Il entame un doctorat en philosophie du droit et en droit international de l’environnement, sous la supervision d’Olivier De Schutter et de Christine Frison. Sa recherche concerne les fonctions et les limites de l’argument scientifique dans les discours juridiques, et en particulier dans les discussions relatives au statut des semences dématérialisées. Dans ce cas d’étude, son projet vise à éclairer comment les arguments scientifiques sont utilisés pour orienter, consolider ou mettre de la pression dans les discussions juridiques. Après un double bachelier à l’université Saint-Louis Bruxelles, Pierre Walckiers a terminé un master en droit à l’ULB, un master en philosophie à l’UCLouvain en juin 2021 et un master études européennes au Collège d’Europe à Natolin (Pologne) en 2022. Il a également fait partie du programme de stage « bluebook » au sein du service juridique de la DG Agriculture, comme partie de ses recherches.
